Meet Michael Osa-Afiana, known in the creative community as Kobi44. Born and raised in Abuja with roots in Delta State, the 25-year-old visual artist and animator isn’t just making art to turn heads; he’s making art to give a voice to the silent.
Finding Sanctuary in the Lines
For Michael, picking up a pencil wasn’t just a hobby—it was a lifeline.
Growing up surrounded by negativity, art became the one space where he could build his own peace. Over time, that personal sanctuary turned into a broader mission: connecting with people who feel overwhelmed, unheard, or forced into silence.
While much of the modern animation world scrambles toward photorealistic 3D renders, Michael consciously chooses a different path. His signature style blends original cartoon aesthetics with raw comic textures, heavily drawing from anime and traditional 2D animation.
“I really don’t fancy 3D,” Michael explains. “It tries too much to be realistic rather than creative.”
For Kobi44, art shouldn’t just mimic reality—it should capture the unfiltered weight of human feeling.
Heavy Themes, Healing Art
At its core, Michael’s work centers on three pillars: faith, emotional expression, and mental well-being.
Alongside collaborator Afroselecta-BBK, Michael co-founded Mimshach Men Animation (MMA) and Comics and Anime (CNA). Together, they’ve already put out notable projects like TrafficJam, Music Matters, and Owawki, and are currently working on a brand-new series titled Twist.
Beyond team collaborations, Michael is deeply invested in personal projects aimed directly at mental health—specifically using color theory to express complex emotional states and building narratives that offer hope to anyone navigating depression or despair.
A Vision Beyond Borders
While his roots are firmly planted in Abuja, Michael’s vision stretches far beyond local borders. Over the next three to five years, he plans to take his storytelling to a global audience—not for fame, but for impact.
In a world where isolation and emotional burnout are at an all-time high, his goal is straightforward: use art to put the pieces of broken souls back together.
“It doesn’t have to be for everybody,” he says. “But it knows those it connects to, and they know it.”
